Hanging a poster on the wall: tips and comparison

You just received your new favorite poster and you want to hang it without making a hole or damaging your wall? Whether you're renting, you change your decor often, or you simply want to preserve your paint, there are plenty of simple and effective tips for hanging a poster without drilling .
Here are all my tried and tested solutions for a wall that's always spotless ✨

💡 The best solutions for hanging a poster without drilling

Good news: you don't need nails or a hammer to display your favorite posters! These methods are perfect for decorating your wall without damaging it , and they're easy to remove if you want to change your decor.

🩵 Adhesive strips and masking tape

Removable adhesive strips are the simplest method: they hold well, leave no marks, and adapt to most surfaces.
You can also opt for colored masking tape : it holds your poster in place while adding an adorable decorative touch.

✨ Tip: Always test your adhesive in an inconspicuous corner, especially on recent paint or fragile wallpaper.

🌿 Magnetic sticks and decorative clips

Magnetic poster holders are both practical and stylish. Two rods clamp your poster at the top and bottom, without glue or nails.
Another idea: stretch a string between two adhesive hooks and hang your posters with pretty clips . This is ideal if you like to change your inspiration wall or mood board often.

🧽 Prepare your wall and your poster before hanging it

Before sticking anything, clean your wall with a soft, dry cloth.
If your poster is rolled up, flatten it under books for a day or two to prevent it from peeling off later.
And if your poster is thin, you can reinforce it with a light sheet of foam board before attaching it.

🖼️ Hang a poster with or without a frame

Frameless

This is the lightest and most flexible solution. Combine masking tape , adhesive strips and clips for a creative and personalized look.

With frame

A frame protects your poster from dust and UV rays, while adding a beautiful finish.

  • The wood gives a warm look.
  • Aluminum offers a more modern style.
  • Plastic is economical and lightweight.
And to avoid drilling, there are special mounting strips for frames : strong and traceless!

🧠 Which method to choose according to your wall type

Every wall is different, so adapt your method to its surface 👇

Wall type Recommended solution
Smooth or painted wall Double-sided adhesive strips or removable tabs
Fragile wallpaper String + clamps (zero direct contact)
Concrete or brick wall Strong adhesive hooks or single attachment point + string

For an A3 poster , a few dots of adhesive are enough.
For an A2 or large format poster , add a few more fasteners for a better hold.

🌸 Decorating ideas for displaying your posters without drilling holes

Want to add style to your wall without breaking out the drill? Here are some simple ideas:

  • Create a poster garland with clothespins and string.
  • Use colored masking tape to frame your poster as a temporary frame.
  • Hang several posters on a thin wall shelf , without glue or nails.
  • Play with formats and heights to create an original inspiration wall

🧼 Remove a poster without damaging your wall

When you want to remove your poster, gently pull the adhesive tabs flat against the wall.
If it's a little too sticky, run a hairdryer over it for a few seconds to soften the glue.
And for light marks, a damp cloth is enough!

🪄 In summary

Poster type Recommended method Installation time
Mini (10×15 cm) Masking tape or mini adhesive strips 2 min
A3 Removable strips or magnetic wands 5 min
A2 Magnetic or Velcro poster holder 10 min
Large format (60×90 cm) Lightweight frame or foam board 15–20 min
