Hanging a poster on the wall: tips and comparison

Accrocher une affiche au mur : astuces et comparatif

Have you just received your new favorite poster and want to hang it without drilling a hole or damaging your wall? Whether you're a tenant, frequently change your decor, or simply want to protect your paintwork, there are plenty of simple and effective tips for hanging a poster without drilling .
Here are all my tried and tested solutions for a perfectly clean wall ✨

The best solutions for hanging a poster without drilling

Good news: you don't need nails or a hammer to display your favorite posters! These methods are perfect for decorating your wall without damaging it , and they're easy to remove if you want to change your decor.

Adhesive strips and masking tape

Removable adhesive strips are the simplest method: they hold well, leave no trace, and adapt to most surfaces.
You can also opt for colored masking tape : it secures your poster while adding an adorable decorative touch.

✨ Tip: always test your adhesive in a discreet corner, especially on fresh paint or fragile wallpaper.

Magnetic chopsticks and decorative clips

Magnetic poster holders are both practical and stylish. Two strips clamp your poster at the top and bottom, without glue or nails.
Another idea: stretch a string between two adhesive hooks and hang your posters with pretty clips . It's ideal if you like to change your inspiration wall or mood board often.

Prepare your wall and poster before hanging it.

Before sticking anything on, clean your wall with a soft, dry cloth.
If your poster is rolled up, flatten it under books for a day or two to prevent it from peeling off afterwards.
And if your poster is thin, you can reinforce it with a light piece of foam board before fixing it.

Hanging a poster with or without a frame

Frameless

This is the lightest and most adaptable solution. It combines masking tape , adhesive strips , and clips for a creative and personalized result.

With frame

A frame protects your poster from dust and UV rays, while adding a beautiful finish.

  • The wood gives a warm feel.
  • Aluminium offers a more modern style.
  • Plastic is economical and lightweight.
And to avoid drilling, there are special fixing strips for frames : strong and without leaving marks!

Which method to choose depending on your wall type

Every wall is different, so adapt your method to its surface 👇

Wall type Recommended solution
Smooth or painted wall Double-sided adhesive strips or removable tabs
Fragile wallpaper String + clips (zero direct contact)
Concrete or brick wall Strong adhesive hooks or a single fixing point + string

For an A3 poster , a few dots of adhesive are sufficient.
For an A2 or large format poster , add a few more fixings for better support.

Decorating ideas for displaying your posters without drilling

Want to add style to your wall without getting out the drill? Here are a few simple ideas:

  • Create a garland of posters using clothespins and string.
  • Use colored masking tape to frame your poster like a temporary frame.
  • Place several posters on a thin wall shelf , without glue or nails.
  • Play with formats and heights to create an original inspirational wall

Removing a poster without damaging your wall

When you want to remove your poster, gently pull on the adhesive tabs, keeping it flat against the wall.
If it's a little too sticky, use a hairdryer for a few seconds to soften the glue.
And for light marks, a damp cloth is enough!

In summary

Poster type Recommended method Installation time
Mini (10×15 cm) Masking tape or mini adhesive strips 2 min
A3 Removable strips or magnetic wands 5 min
A2 Magnetic or Velcro poster holder 10 min
Large format (60×90 cm) Lightweight frame or foam board 15–20 min
